Mostly because they should've been able to see the ball not leave her hand, since there's some distance between them and Alice. Unlike when a dog is right beneath the feet of a human, where the motion of the arm for a brief moment brings the hand out of the dog's focused field of vision. And even then it doesn't work every time, though I suppose it probably always works the first time. And Alice does know magic, so I guess she can do what would be impossible for a regular dog owner. (And strictly speaking, I think that "some how" should be one word, not two.) Hehe! I didn’t think that they’d fall for it.
